Early Eyecare Key to Proper Development

October 21, 2008

Often significant visual disorders go undiagnosed because eye examinations are not happening early in life.  Children often can’t articulate what types of visual problems (double vision, shadowing, blurring) they are experiencing.  Furthermore, kids don’t always have a  point of reference to know what “normal” vision is.  Many times doctors diagnose significant refractive errors (eyeglass prescriptions) when the child thinks their vision is “fine.”  Kids assume that is the way everyone sees.   The American Optometric Association recommends a child’s first eye examination by an eye doctor at 6 months of age.
